Iran: Steelworkers demand better pay and conditions in Ahvaz

We publish below a statement by the Shahrokh Zamani Action Campaign on the steelworkers protest in the Khuzestan province of Iran

Workers of the Iran National Steel Industrial Group (INSIG) marched in front of the Khuzestan governor’s office in Ahvaz on Sunday, February 13th. They were protesting against the failure of the Iranian regime’s authorities to address their demands.

They had previously announced their demands to the officials of INSIG and the officials of Khuzestan province but these demands had been ignored.

The steelworkers want higher wages and improvements in their living standards. They also want production to be raised and barriers that prevent this – e.g., the lack of spare parts and equipment for repairs – to be provided.

According to the Iranian regime’s official data the annual inflation rate in January 2022 reached 42.4 per cent. During the thousands of protests and strikes of the past two years workers have often carried placards with the following slogan: “Our wages are in rials, our expenses are in dollars”.
